The New York Times recently announced that Apple is testing designs for a smart watch running their mobile OS, iOS. This kind of watch would feature a 1.5 inch LCD display and would be connected to your iPhone or whatever else iOS device, allowing you to do basic operations from your wrist, like sending emails and text messages. The NYTimes said that sources “close to Apple’s testing and prototype environment” reported a low-power Bluetooth technology and a design that would allow a longer battery life. It is also rumored that this iWatch could feature a specific flexible type of glass to better fit on people’s wrist.
This is actually not new. We’ve been hearing rumors of an Apple-branded smart watch since late 2011, but it seems that this time, people are taking it seriously. This is probably due to the fact that the past year has seen impressive progresses in the flexible and ultra-small technology area, like the OLED displays from Samsung that were shown-off at CES 2013 last month and that could let us have bendable smartphones and tablets. So, it is possible that Apple would want to integrate this technology with a wearable device like a watch. It would be a new innovation from the Cupertino-based company that has not introduced anything really new since the iPad in 2010.
